By April India's very hot
The rest of the hemisphere is not
Cool Arctic winds elsewhere hold sway
Here Himalaya's block the way.
Soon the heat is quite intense
And all of it makes perfect sense,
The rising air sets up a flow
A strong sea breeze begins to blow.
This humid air when forced to rise
Delivers us a welcome prize.
And just as we begin to boil,
Give up pretense of any toil,
The soothing rains cool the land
And permit our crops to stand.
In winter then this flow reverses
The dryer wind of course disburses
Much less rain but when it passes
The Bay of Bengal it amasses
Some moisture so that we can boast
Of winter rain on the Coromandel Coast.
The Arabs used this two way flow
To smartly travel to and fro.
There Mausam lead to our Monsoon
By any name, it is a boon.
When it comes and it mostly does
Our country has a happy buzz.
But when it fails our crops are lost
This damage is a heavy cost.
If we store this heavy rain
There is much that we can gain.
If we ignore irrigation
All we can do is mitigation.
The IMD gives its prediction
But what it lacks is conviction.
In order to support decision
There needs to be much more precision
Of course in space but also time
And that is why I plead in rhyme
Our forecasts should not be a shame
Our nation needs to up its game.
Why should our meteorology
Be a government monopoly?
Don't you think it would be best
If all together we invest
In data first and then prediction?
Can we announce with conviction
What all the farmers surely seek
Rainfall by region, every week?
If only they could get to know
Before deciding what to sow!
The day's not now but it isn't far
And thanks to Jatin, who's a star,
Though farmers now just have to bet
Soon they'll be sure, thanks to Skymet.
And Godrej will provide the seed
That will serve the farmer's need.
Whether the Monsoon's good or bad
No need for us, then, to be sad.
And knowledge is said to be power
So whether or not we get a shower,
Once we predict, it will be great.
What we can't cure we'll mitigate.
