The Captain

This poem was written when my uncle, Naval Godrej passed away in 1990 after a terminal illness caused by contaminated blood transfusion he received when he was stabbed in 1979. It was again read at Godrej Baug when a road was named after him (this was covered in BPP review and Jam-E-Jamshed)

Marshall and Godrej
Who can escape the sting of fate?
At best we can but feint and dodge,
We know some day the barb will lodge.
For some it's soon for other's late.
Though nature yields sometimes to reason
Not all transpires in timely season.

How dreadful-a slow sapping death,
Where every moment's full of strife
And breathing's all that's left of life
And life itself not worth a breath.
We must accept the soul is leaving,
But nothing can arrest our grieving.

For solace, there still is the past
And grief is foiled by reveries-
The treasure of sweet memories
Of which our hoard is rich and vast.
Each day we can produce a jewel
And grief is bound to lose the duel.

But why not gaze the other way
And build for him a monument,
Complete the work for which he spent
Each and every living day.
And thus the wounds of grief we suture
By looking at the past and future.

No one quite knows where he can be.
I have avision-a quiet beach,
He stands and gazes at the reach,
He boards a yacht ,he's out at sea,
He navigates an endless ocean.
And I am lulled by this strange notion.
